Imaginary Atlas

Detail from "Imaginary Atlas 3", 2022, mixed media on linen, 24 x 24"
My most recent mixed media paintings resemble maps of invented worlds.  I start by building up a dense surface using acrylic, watercolor, pencil and pastel in many layers.  This painting and drawing forms the imaginary oceans on the surface.   I then use collage materials to create shapes that resemble continents.  These collage elements vary from econometric notes, orchestral score or torn up maps.  I then continue to build up the surface with many more layers until the final layer of cold wax.  With my multi-layered techniques and patina of cold wax, the paintings appear to be ancient maps from an imaginary atlas.
