Thanks Julie
2020, mixed media on linen, 48 x 72"
Painting begins with several layers of acrylic and watercolor on linen. I then collaged on rice paper with some abstract drawing. I then alternated layers of drawing with layers of painting. Some of the drawing was free form and some used stencils. While painting I sometimes then dripped paint and spattered paint and picked the canvas up and let it run around and sometimes I would use acrylic with stencils. The final layer is cold wax.
I was lucky to see a Julie Mehretu show at the LACMA right when I had just started this painting, the first in my Residency series.. Although my work is very different, her use of texture and drawing and the complexity of her images was inspirational and influenced the whole series.
