Maps are a central element in my work, both as collage elements and as a prompt to create abstract paintings that seem to chart imaginary worlds or depict fictional creatures that might inhabit these places.
Some of my mixed media paintings resemble maps of invented lands. I start by building up a dense surface that forms the imaginary oceans on the surface of the painting. I then use collage materials to create shapes that resemble continents. With my multi-layered techniques and patina of cold wax, the paintings can be read as ancient maps from an imaginary atlas. My imaginary world map theme invites observers to navigate the layers and investigate further.
